Stephen Gill: Hackney Flowers

Photographer Stephen Gill finds inspiration in the streets of London.

Photographer Stephen Gill constantly returns to the streets of London for inspiration, and throughout his portfolio we see a particular interest in the east. His photo book Hackney Flowers returns to this end of the capital, and in its pages we read a visually stimulating love letter to a wonderfully vibrant borough. For this series Gill collected flowers, seeds and plants from Hackney, pressing and photographing them against original photographs of the area. The result is a collection of multi-layered images, in which the old-fashioned art of flower pressing is juxtaposed with the urban scenes of contemporary Hackney - to beautiful effect. The collage, Gill has said, serves as a metaphor 'for the beauty that may sometimes be found in the banal'.
