Hiroshi Manabe
Post-war artist Hiroshi Manabe envisages a colourful future.
Born in 1932, Hiroshi Manabe was to become one of the most famous illustrators of the post-war period. He gained recognition for the designs that adorned the covers of many popular sci-fi novels. His work, characterised by crisp geometric shapes and vibrant colour palettes, came to encapsulate the feel of the period; they were forward-looking, located in futuristic landscapes and punctuated with strange, hovering vehicles. People celebrated his optimistic vision of the future, and his illustrations now decorate various installations around Niihama, the rural city of his hometown.
