Chino Otsuka: Imagine finding me

Going back in time: Chino Otsuka revisits her childhood in a new photographic series.

At first glance, Chino Otsuka's photographic series 'Imagine Finding Me' is engaging and sweet, but not extraordinary. The images depict a small girl accompanied by a woman as they climb steps, catch trains and eat meals together. But a little insight into the project shows just how extraordinary these images are: for Otsuka is both the girl and the grown woman. By digitally inserting herself into old family photographs, Otsuka revisits scenes from her childhood, becoming, as she does so, both the protagonist and the tourist in her own life story. This will be Otsuka's first UK publication - and it is an incredibly poignant one, asking striking questions of identity, maturity and memory.
