Alice Tye: Mordernist Architecture in Film

Alice Tye turns to California for her series of movie-inspired paintings.

What better way to spend your final year as an illustration undergraduate than combining the forms that interest you the most? Alice Tye, a recent graduate of Camberwell College, has done just that, drawing on her fascination with film and a preoccupation with modernist architecture to create a truly original series with paint and lithography. Her dissertation - ‘Is modernist architecture used as visual shorthand for malevolent characters in popular films?’ - fed into her Modernist Architecture in Films series, in which she paints from stills of popular films featuring modernist architecture. The paintings are incredibly compelling: they incorporate West Coast sunshine with sinister shadows, and offer a fresh take on familiar films.
